As one of the longest-serving female CEOs of a Fortune 500 company, Indra Nooyi is an Indian-born American business executive who has made significant contributions to the corporate world, most notably as the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of PepsiCo from 2006 to 2018. During her tenure, she consistently ranked among the world's most powerful women, including being ranked number 13 on the Forbes list in 2014 and the second most powerful woman on the Fortune list in 2015 and 2017.
Nooyi's exceptional leadership extends beyond PepsiCo as she serves on the boards of Amazon and the International Cricket Council. Nooyi's academic background is as impressive as her professional accomplishments. She earned bachelor's degrees in physics, chemistry, and mathematics from Madras Christian College of the University of Madras in 1975 and a Post Graduate Programme Diploma from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta in 1976.
In 1978, she was admitted to Yale School of Management, where she earned a master's degree in public and private management in 1980. Indra Nooyi's early career included roles at Johnson & Johnson, the textile firm Beardsell Ltd., Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Motorola, and Asea Brown Boveri, where she held various strategic and planning positions.
Indra joined PepsiCo in 1994 and became CEO in 2006, making her the fifth CEO in the company's history. Under her leadership, PepsiCo underwent significant restructuring, including the divestiture of Tricon (now Yum! Brands), and made strategic acquisitions such as Tropicana in 1998 and Quaker Oats Company (including Gatorade) in 2001.
These moves strengthened PepsiCo’s position in the global market, resulting in an increase in annual net profit from $2.7 billion to $6.5 billion during her tenure.
Her strategic vision, known as 'Performance with a Purpose,' is focused on the long-term while making a positive impact on society and the environment. She reclassified PepsiCo’s products into three categories: 'fun for you,' 'better for you,' and 'good for you,' moving corporate spending towards healthier alternatives.
Indra also championed sustainability initiatives, including reducing packaging waste, conserving water, and switching to renewable energy sources. She fostered a culture of employee retention, connecting personally with her leadership team by engaging with their families.
Beyond her corporate achievements, Indra has been a prominent figure in public service and philanthropy. She co-directs the Connecticut Economic Resource Center and serves as co-chair of the Reopen Connecticut Advisory Group.
She has been elected chairwoman of the U.S.-India Business Council and served on numerous boards, including the World Economic Forum, International Rescue Committee, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
